Tips for Conserving Water and Maintaining a Healthy Garden
1. A layer of Cedar Mulch or Bark Mulch 2” to 3” thick can add significant water conservation. In either newly planted landscapes or established ones. It reduces water evaporation from the soil and keeps the soil temperatures cooler during the hot summer months. It also discourages weed growth and soil compaction.
2. Conditioning the soil adds to its ability to retain water and nourish the plants. The best time to condition the soil is in the cooler months of winter and early spring. Aerating the soil at this time will also help fertilizers and water to be used better by the plants in your yard. Don’t condition and aerate after March it will increase evaporation as the plants need the moisture even more during hot days.
3. During Dry Windy periods watering should be watched a little more closely. Adding A few extra minutes to the timer on blustery days may be necessary or even an extra cycle 20 min after the normal cycle.
The following is a list of plants that will do well in a mostly shaded area. Some direct sun will be okay for most of the plants listed. Remember most shade plants are acid loving and need a little special care when planting. Use Gardener & Bloome Acid Planting mix with everything you plant in the shade. The soils in our area are generally poor so you should mulch twice a year with acid mix and feed regularly with and acid fertilizer. Also using an Iron supplement can greatly improve your success in the shade…
